“What is a functional food?”

A functional food is a food given that has an additional function or enhanced benefits.  It is often related to the promotion of health or the prevention of diseases, by adding new ingredients or more to the existing ingredients.

This functional food can be:

  • Probiotics – the live microorganisms or the “healthy” bacteria;
  • Prebiotics – promotes the growth of a particular bacteria in the large intestines which are beneficial to the overall intestinal health; and lastly,
  • Stanols and sterols – which naturally occurs in plants and fruits and are thought to have a cholesterol lowering effect.
